Janitordesign Roofing notes for Canadian homeowners

About Janitordesign

Last reviewed October 2026

Janitordesign is a small independent publication about residential roofs in Canada. It exists because the information a homeowner needs before spending a significant amount of money on a roof is usually written either by someone selling the roof or by someone writing for a climate that is not ours.

The material here is organised around causes rather than products. Most of what goes wrong on a Canadian roof starts in the attic: air leaking out of the ceiling, insulation blocking the soffits, a fan ducted to nowhere. If you understand that chain, the decisions about materials, repairs and contractors get much easier.

How the guides are written

Each guide is built from the parts of the problem that stay true: physics, construction sequence, and the provincial framework around licensing and insurance. Where a number is set by a code or a regulator, we name the source rather than reprinting a figure that may have changed since publication. Building codes in Canada are adopted and amended provincially, and municipalities add their own requirements on top, so anything binding needs confirming locally.
