What the site is

General educational material about residential roofs, attics and related building assemblies in Canada. It is written for homeowners who want to understand their own house. It is not a professional inspection, an engineering opinion or legal advice, and it is not specific to your building.

Limits of the information

Every house is different, and roof assemblies behave differently depending on structure, climate zone, exposure and the quality of past work. Building codes in Canada are adopted and amended by each province and territory, and municipalities impose additional requirements. Roof work carries a genuine risk of falls, electrical contact and structural collapse. Nothing on this site is an instruction to climb onto a roof. Where a guide describes a check, it describes one that can be done from the ground or from inside the building.
